Koevoet (Afrikaans for 'crowbar') was the SADF's elite counter-insurgency unit operating in South West Africa (now Namibia) during the Border War. Each Koevoet team operated under a two-letter phonetic callsign — Zulu-Tango being one of the operational callsign groups. The AK-47 on this patch is deeply symbolic: Koevoet units were renowned for capturing vast quantities of SWAPO weapons, and the AK became an unofficial emblem of their battlefield dominance.

Following the end of apartheid and Namibian independence, the unit was disbanded and most uniforms, insignia, and unit items were deliberately destroyed or lost. Callsign-specific field tabs like this are among the rarest and most personal survivals of 20th century African military history — the units no longer exist.
