A genuine, original and extremely rare Kavango Koevoet Mbindi Z4H unit shield patch from the South African Bush War era. Woven construction, dark green with yellow/gold and white border. Features a bold yellow and black wolf/dog head at centre. Text banner at top reads "KAVANGO KOEVOET", centre text "MBINDI", and callsign "Z4H" at bottom. Not a reproduction.
Koevoet (Afrikaans for 'crowbar') was the SADF's elite counter-insurgency unit operating in South West Africa (now Namibia) during the Border War. The Kavango Mbindi Z4H sub-unit was one of several callsign groups operating in the Kavango region. Each callsign group had its own distinct patch — making unit-specific pieces like this highly collectible.
Following the end of apartheid and Namibian independence, the unit was disbanded and most uniforms, insignia, and unit items were deliberately destroyed or lost. Original unit patches like this are among the rarest survivals of 20th century African military history — the units no longer exist. This is an original piece, not a replica.
